Question by : What is the BEST Nikon DSLR camera and lens currently available?
I want to buy my boyfriend, for his birthday, the most top of the line DSLR camera, from Nikon (they are his favorite). He is an extremely experienced and amazing photographer. I, however, know nothing of the subject. I do not know about the shutter speed, aperture, pixels, etc… Can you please help me? Price is not an issue, I just want to know the best camera Nikon offers (D7000? D5100?), and the best lens as well (I know even less about lenses…).
Thanks much!!!

You need to tell us your budget and may be what he like to shoot or else, we can easily spend more money than you might be able muster. FWIW, Nikon’s top of the line camera is the D3x and it’s priced at roughly $ 8000. That is a camera typically used only by professionals and a very limited number of amateurs who can afford it. Based on your post, I’m assuming you are looking for Nikon’s best “consumer” grade camera. At this time; that’s probably the D7000, priced at about $ 1200. Both prices are for the camera body only, but the D7000 can be purchased with an 18-105mm DX format “kit” lens for $ 1500. You can use the same lenses on either camera body.
As for the best lens, the D7000 can use almost any F-mount lens you could use on the larger and more expenive D3x. Unless you know what it is he wants to shoot, I’d recommend getting Nikon’s 18-200mm VR zoom or stick to the 18-105mm “kit” lens for the D7000. The 18-200mm gives you one lens that can do almost everything one might do with a DSLR and it costs about $ 800. Most of the more specialize lenses that are faster and/or sharper, also cost considerably more and may or may not be useful to him.

Since money is no object…A Nikon D3x at $ 7,999.95. The lens would depend on what he is shooting.
For example, there is a:
600mm lens, great for nature for $ 10,300 or a
70-200 f/2.8 lens great for a lot of things for $ 2,199 ( I use the Canon equivalent for everything from portraits to wildlife to sports).

The thing to remember is that photography gear is mostly personal preference. My wife refuses to buy me camera gear because of it (she will buy anything else for me including a gun, but not photography stuff).
I would suggest that instead of buying him a camera and lenses, that you take him to lunch and then stop by the local camera shop (maybe blindfold him on the way there). Then say “Happy B-day…you can spend up to $ xxxx”. He will be delighted and like a kid in a candy store.
Yup. Above posters are correct. The best Nikon on the market is the Nikon D3X. As for lenses, there isn’t really any way to say what the best is. It depends too much on what he wants to shoot, and how he uses his camera. What might be my first choice for a lens is probably not what his first choice would be. If you want to take a shot in the dark at it, though, you could try to go for a NIKON AF-S 24-70 F2.8 G ED. It’s a high-quality lens with a focal range that covers an area that most photographers tend to take most of their shots in.
Also, if you’re the type of person who would seriously buy your boyfriend a D3X, and things ever don’t work out for you two, I’m available. Call me.
Just don’t put a $ 100 18-55mm DX lens on the D3x. It wouldn’t look right.
Hi,
Your boyfriend is extremely experienced. So why not ask him what he needs? I mean, buying a new camera when his might already be fine is a waste of money. It’d be better to buy a new lens or a chocolate for that matter
D3x>D3>D3s>D700 – all of these are above $ 2000. I don’t think buying this would be smart.
D300s>D7000>D90 – these are great and I recommend the D7000
D5100>D3100 – beginner models, working really good as well.
The best lens? There are 60 out there.
