Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

More than adequate alternative to Canon’s hood., July 1, 2011

I recently picked up a Canon 18-200mm lens and wanted the tulip hood (which should come with the lens but doesn’t for some reason). However, the cheapest price I could find for the hood was $25 and most places had it listed for much more. I simply couldn’t justify spending that kind of cash for what amounted to a tiny piece of plastic. So, I did some research (which included reading the other Amazon reviews for this product) and decided to pick up the Fotodiox unit.

Some other tulip hoods which claim to be compatible with the Canon 18-200mm lens aren’t actually bayonet models. Instead they screw on to the front of the lens making it a pain to store when not in use. The bayonet models, like this one and the stock Canon, allow for a quick removal and reversal of the hood for simpler storage. This works superbly on the Fotodiox hood with one exception: there is no “red dot” to help you align it with the “fat” flaps on the top and bottom (as other reviewers have mentioned). However, once set, the hood uses a quarter-turn to lock in place so this is hardly a problem.

My one complaint is that this hood is a good bit wider than the lens on which it is installed. It does not hug the lens when put on in reverse. This obviously isn’t a problem when actively shooting and doesn’t seem to cause trouble when storing the lens when it is mounted on the camera. The extra diameter does come into play when storing the lens separately from the body. One plus to this extra width, though, is that it does make it easier to reach your lens cap if you forget to take it off before sliding on the hood.

Overall this hood from Fotodiox is a great alternative to Canon’s hood. It is significantly cheaper and retains basically all of the same features.

Very satisfied. Hood is wider than expected but has benefit of giving your fingers enough room to insert the lens cap.

This is a cost-effective lens hood that works! Inside of hood is black & matte rather than smooth & polished (guess this is better in terms of light reflection). Hood can be reversed and snapped on front of lens when not in use.

Only set-back is that the red dot underneath the text is missing – where it would be much easier to align the hood with the lens. But after 2 or 3 attempts in fixing and removing, the red dot issue goes away.

Happy with this hood given the price I paid for it.
